Sonos may soon produce its own wireless headphones. The American firm has taken control of RHA Audio, a Scottish company specializing in the matter.
Renowned for its multiroom audio solutions, Sonos has expanded its catalog in recent years by offering soundbars and portable speakers. Next step, wireless headphones?
RHA Audio passes under the fold of Sonos
Sonos took a majority stake in the capital of RHA Audio, recently renamed “Origin North”. This is what we learn in a document published on October 26 on the website of Companies House, the register of companies in the United Kingdom. When contacted by TrustedReviews media regarding this discovery, Sonos simply made the following comment:
“Innovation remains at the heart of Sonos, both in the products we design and the culture that powers them. Occasionally, we acquire teams, talents, and/or technologies that enrich our existing and future product roadmap. We have nothing else to share at the moment ”.
Founded in 2011, RHA Audio / Origin North specializes in the design of in-ear headphones. Its catalog includes the TrueConnect and TrueControl ANC, wireless models. Know-how that Sonos can now use for its own range of products, which could therefore expand with headphones.
A rumor that does not date from yesterday
It's been a while since rumors have seen Sonos expand beyond the world of wireless speakers and soundbars. In January 2019, Bloomberg announced that the company was working on headphones. Information that has since been corroborated by the publication of several patents in September 2020, then in February 2021. However, they never materialized in a commercial product. More recently, last May, a patent describing wireless headphones was spotted.
Naturally, such products should fit into the Sonos ecosystem. For example, they could take advantage of the Sound Swap function, introduced with the Roam speaker, which allows audio streaming from one device to another with one click.
