Despite all the attention Facebook pays to 'fake news, fake accounts manage to slip through the cracks.

This is the case of a fake account attributed to Elon Musk and which benefited from the precious blue badge.

A fake Elon Musk validated by Facebook

Quite recently, Facebook, therefore, validated, via its famous blue badge, a “fan” account dedicated to Elon Musk. A page that is no longer online, but which then had a little over 150,000 subscribers. The icing on the cake, the latter was piloted by a crypto-con artist, a fan of Bitcoin ...

Despite an appearance that can be deceptive, a quick turn in the 'About' section quickly allowed us to verify that it was not an official page. “This is a fan page, which includes tweets and messages from Elon Musk,” one could read. It's hard to know how Facebook's validation process could have been fooled so easily ...

The validation system is particularly opaque at Facebook (as elsewhere, hello Twitter!) And requires filling out a form before praying to the god “algorithm” to hope to benefit (or not, very often) from the precious blue badge.

This page, therefore, had a total of only 11 publications, and its 'Transparency' section also made it possible to visualize that it was managed by a person residing in Egypt. Moreover, before being baptized Elon Musk, the page was named Kizito Gavin, before opting for the name of the founder of Tesla on October 17.

Contacted by Engadget, the parent company of Facebook, Meta, did not wish to comment on this umpteenth quack.
