Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Oculus are now united under the Meta banner, the new name of the parent company of Mark Zuckerberg's group. A name which, you will see, is not due to chance.

It was during the Facebook Connect 2021 conference that Mark Zuckerberg announced this Thursday the biggest change in the history of his company, which is simply adopting a new name. The Facebook group (so we're not talking about the social network here, but the parent company) officially becomes Meta, a name that refers to the company's next major project, the metaverse.

Two poles: platforms and social networks, and virtual reality and augmented reality

All the group's applications and technologies, namely Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus, are now under a common brand that no longer takes the name of one of them, but the name Meta. 'Meta's goal will be to bring the metaverse to life and help people connect, find communities and develop businesses,' warns the American company.

This name change is intended to support the gradual transformation of the company and the spirit that its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, wants to instill in it. The structure of the firm will not change, but it will still be split into two groups of activities on its future financial statements, from that of the fourth quarter of 2021, moreover, expected for the beginning of the year 2022.

Meta will now have two operational segments. The first, Family of Apps, will bring together the activity of the different social platforms that you know. The second, Reality Labs, will bring together activities around augmented reality and virtual reality content, software, and hardware. This includes the famous fictional virtual world that Meta wants to create, the metaverse.

The metaverse, the work of the decade for Facebook Meta

“Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens, to immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. “We understood what the Californian group wanted to focus on: the metaverse.

It will be a kind of hybrid between the social experiences that we live in today. This virtual world will allow everyone to share immersive experiences with other people, even located thousands of kilometers from their position. Users will be represented by their avatar which they will embody in 3D, interacting with other users/avatars around the world, a concept recently rediscovered in Steven Spielberg's film, Ready Player One.

Mark Zuckerberg is convinced of it: the metaverse will be the big site of the Facebook group er… of the Meta group over the decade. The Oculus Quest will obviously be the basis and the product of this extraordinary project. Meta plans to invest $ 150 million in immersive learning to train the very next generation of creators.
